I suspect this film will struggle to entertain:

(a) people who are utterly humourless;
(b) people whose native language isn't English.

Combine the two, and... well, it's no surprise.

As with Withnail & I, the joy of In Bruges is in its virtuoso use of language - like Bruce Robinson, Martin McDonagh has an uncanny knack of picking exactly the right word or phrase, both to serve the narrative and to trigger an involuntary belly laugh - the fact that Atanasov thinks it's just "random lines" reveals how totally he's missed the essential comedic point. And of course anyone even vaguely familiar with McDonagh's career will know that he's far from "inexperienced" - he'd written at least six highly acclaimed plays (and notched up two Tony nominations) prior to making the film.

His issues seem that he mostly expected, well, another type of movie.
It's actually quite ironic, I guess, because he keeps on saying how the movie is cliched while simultaneously expecting exactly the kind of movies he's already seen. In the end, he seemed to have missed the bitter-sweet melancholic drama tht underlies the whole movie, instead expecting in vain a pop comedy like Snatch or a pulpier gangster movie like Layer Cake.
I'm not a English native speaker either, and that never prevented me enjoying the hell out of In Bruges.

Not to mention Ritchie's movies are ensemble casts and In Bruges has like 6 people in it.

Hilarious that Martin McDonagh is being compared to Guy Ritchie. Only a BR.com review would be so foolish.

And emotion. And wit.

In fact, the only thing I don't particularly like about the film is Carter Burwell's oddly hard rock soundtrack during the chase scenes.
