There goes the Complete works theory though— of course, I brought this on myself by not guessing the Trilogy for the first time all year ha

Curious about the special features that will also appear on this boxset. Koker seems like a good opportunity to throw in A Wedding Suit and Case #1, Case #2, Homework, and Bread and Alley. But maybe Criterion has other plans for Kiarostami's films about children and school.

Is the New Year's drawing taken care of now with An Angel at My Table and the Koker Trilogy being announced?

Yeah, I was just gonna say I'm rather surprised they upgraded Magnificent Obsession before Written on the Wind.goblinfootballs wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 4:58 pmAll of the Written on the Wind posts over the past few years only to troll us with Magnificent Obsession?

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
It makes a little sense. MO didn’t require a full upgrade. This is essentially an HD ready port of the prior editoon, wheras WotW is going to require a restoration (which I believe was completed some time ago), new supplements, and artwork. But still, they’ve been teasong it long enough you’d think it would be here by now.captveg wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 5:16 pmYeah, I was just gonna say I'm rather surprised they upgraded Magnificent Obsession before Written on the Wind.goblinfootballs wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 4:58 pmAll of the Written on the Wind posts over the past few years only to troll us with Magnificent Obsession?

Magnificent Obsession, imo, is handily the best of his films and I’m very excited that Criterion has opted to push it ahead of the more canonical choice that I also assumed would get priority. I think it’s also reasonable because it and All That Heaven Allows more naturally make a pair considering their many similarities so it does make sense for the two Sirk BDs that exist for the time being will be these.

These aren't the only two Sirk titles on Blu-ray

Looks like What did the Lady forget is the winner for the bonus film of the year. At least for me!
The Inland Sea is only 54 minutes but is priced at 39.95, haven't other short films like Patriotism and Night and Fog been priced at a tier lower?
Magnificent Obsession bluray is two discs? wow that's a change from their usual cram on one blu policy.
Koker trilogy spine numbering seems mixed up right now on their website. Trilogy, and Life Goes On, both listed as spine 991 and Where is my friends house listed as 990.
I'm pretty surprised Taste of Cherry didn't get upgraded the same month as the Koker trilogy.

The Ritchie film is overpriced but I'm keen to see it just the same, and I'm very happy with the upgrade for the Campion as well as the announcements of the Ozu and the Kiarostami set.

IIRC, when "I Married a Witch" was announced it was at the $40 tier and enough people wrote criterion to ask if it was a mistake, they eventually changed it to the $30 tier.

The original DVD of Night and Fog was $20, but the reissued blu-ray is the standard $40. I don't even remember the last film that had a $30 price tag; it must have been before dual format?
Anyway, I'm still betting on a Kiarostami box in November/December. Especially as none of the early docs/children's films are here as extras, and I can't see them getting a physical release outside of a bigger project.

All the new titles announced for the month will be day-one (of B&N sale) purchases for me. This hasn’t happened for a long time.

That depends on if they are going to release two big box sets at the end of the year, because the Showa Godzilla set is most likely getting released in November.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Eric Skillman reached out to Erik Larsen via email and Twitter (Skillman has since deleted the tweet) asking him if he wanted to do a small piece for them. Given Larsen's style I assumed it was a Godzilla film. He later tweeted to a couple other comic artists to DM him about a project. And these https://twitter.com/EricSkillman/status ... 04608?s=19

This is the only evidence I can find (at the moment) regarding GODZILLA, but not specifically of it coming this year:FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 8:44 pmHas there been strong rumors that Godzilla coming this year? I don't remember seeing anything specific

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Yes. First, earlier in the year Janus finally secured the rights to the last three titles they had been missing. Subsequently, after years of getting requests to screen the films theatrically, Janus has finally started letting them out with a number of Godzilla marathons sponsored by Janus popping up of late. Finally, Eric Skillman has been contacting a number of kaiju-related comic book artists on Twitter and asking them to take part in a new project for Criterion. One of them posted a few days later asking whether or not they should buy a giant, $700 Godzilla figure, Skillman replied jokingly that it could be considered a work expense.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2019 8:44 pmHas there been strong rumors that Godzilla coming this year? This is the same thing they did with Zatoichi, and if they’re already putting artwork together we can more than likely expect an announcement in the next 6 months.
