Re: Criterion and StudioCanal
I would tend to agree except for a few things... First, the SC rep posting an instagram photo of her visit Criterion (saying "The best of #studiocanalcatalogue at the cinephilie temple #criterion and suggesting that more titles are coming), second, the KL Insiders constant reference to other labels and third, Criterion's schedule is so packed that any said titles could be released later rather than sooner.

Criterion and StudioCanal
If you look at criterion’s schedule and presume that they want to announce spine 1000 in November that means July-October need only four new releases per month (not the five of the last four ish months) and no room for new box sets in this time frame.domino harvey wrote:Considering we’ve seen zero OOP StudioCanal titles return to Criterion, I think we should start preparing for the possible eventuality that none are with Criterion. I could easily see the label saying “Well, fuck that” to dealing with them after the original rights mess
That means probably more upgrades in these four months, or the perfect time to have a series of four-eight studio canal titles announced from July to October.
In other words, criterion could have targeted July to October as the ideal time for a studio canal reissue project, in terms of juggling schedule priorities and labor time
So rather than koker trilogy in July, the big titles might be Ran and Third Man Second and third editions, respectively.

Why you gotta pick on the Koker Trilogy?!So rather than koker trilogy in July, the big titles might be Ran and Third Man Second and third editions, respectively.

There is no reason to believe the 1000th spine is coming in November rather than sooner

They also could just skip #1000 if they wanted to release it in a specific month

and/or announce its release “early” like the olympics set

That’s what I think they’ll do, announce its release before the October titles announcement.Ribs wrote:and/or announce its release “early” like the olympics set

I'm just gonna throw this out there, but it would be fun if Criterion released Spine #1000 alongside a number of long-OOP titles from StudioCanal. That would be heavenly.

Re: Criterion and StudioCanal
In addition to Kino and Shout Factory (and presumably Criterion), it appears yet another label (or two) has licensed SC titles, per the KL Insider:
So, one way or another it would seem SC titles will be plentiful for the North American market over the next few years. (Kino alone has 130+ titles). It [Angelique series] was still available when we were done, so it's not with us and the two companies who did SC deals simultaneously. Since then, others have done deals with them, so I don't know if any of those other labels have picked them up or not.

Good, they hold a lot of great French films that still haven’t seen English-friendly releases

Re: Criterion and StudioCanal
Also, worth noting:
Nights of Cabiria
Variety Lights
The White Sheik
(This also confirms again that Kino does not have Grand Illusion, which was likely retained by Lionsgate as their BD release is still in print)
This means that Kino did not license these former Criterion SC titles:We have LA MARSEILLAISE. No other Renoir or any Fellini movies in the SC deal.

I know disc sales have been dropping fast, but I wonder how much money StudioCanal lost out on because Lionsgate has, essentially, been sitting on SC's catalog for a decade?

Kino has the rights to 'Touchez pas au grisbi', which means that the "other company" has 'Le Trou'.

So, the two OOP Melvilles not announced (yet) by Kino are Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge unless I missed something. Did Mr Kino say they had all the SC JPMs? I don’t remember.

Kino Insider said they only have four Melvilles:
Léon Morin, Priest
Le Doulos
Un Flic
Bob le flambeur

As upfront of a confirmation that Criterion is back with StudioCanal from KLI.
Per them, Criterion has Masculin Feminin and Made in USA, but not Pierrot le Fou which is with another label (?).
Pierrot le Fou could not be less Shout if it tried, so it surprises me that it is not included as being a future Criterion release, at least in the way KLI phrased it. Could a 4th company have stepped in or maybe just Lionsgate?
