Dermot Mulroney or Dylan McDermott: A Field Guide
Here’s the most WTF revelation of recent memory: Dermot Mulroney played the cello in the scores for the third and fourth entries in the Mission: Impossible series, and also Rogue One

McDermott hasn’t been in anything of note besides the Practice ages ago, but Mulroney keeps popping up in good stuff like Enlightened and I Still See You, so it’s easy for me to keep them apart

Dylan McDermott has also been getting some good recent notices for his serial killer portrait in The Clovehitch Killer. And I quite liked him in that Spanish sci-fi film that headlined Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffiths amongst the eclectic cast, Automata.
I do not really know if he is that good a cellist though.

This thread has too much McDermott defending, not enough Mulroney re-enforcing

I googled to remind myself which one was which and realized I was confusing both with Rupert Everett

Guys, I just looked at Mulroney’s Wikipedia page and learned he was married to Catherine Keener for 17 years and this is his main pic on Wiki:
This is a man who is carpe diem-ing in circles around the rest of us. Like that well-known expression says, it’s a Dermot Mulroney world, we’re all just living in it

My wife couldn't believe I mixed the two up all the time and it's wonderful to see I'm not alone.
Of course, her confusing Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard all of the time is perfectly acceptable from her point of view.

The only thing I've seen McDermott in is Twister and I somehow make this mix-up all the time.

Re: Dermot Mulroney or Dylan McDermott: A Field Guide
That looks like the longest set up to an "all white people look alike to me" joke that I have ever seen! I guess this confusion is similar to the Jeff Daniels/Bill Pullman one, and the Michael Biehn/Jeff Fahey one (the latter of which seemingly got acknowledged a little with their casting together in Planet Terror!)
I'm presuming Murdoch means McDermott's debut role in 1989's Twister, the first feature by Michael Almereyda, with a cast that includes Harry Dean Stanton, Crispin Glover and William Burroughs! I've never seen that but it sounds interesting just from those elements!
The Dylan McDermott role I most remember is his boyfriend of the heroine in Richard Stanley's Hardware (NSFW: Language. Thanks, Iggy Pop!), who unwittingly brings back the still functional killer robot to the apartment of his shut-in girlfriend that she then has to fight off. He gets to have a bit of fun with his robotic arm and drug-trippy fate. That's one of his very early roles too, but one where he has one of his bigger roles. Apparently according to Stanley's commentary McDermott is quite a religious person and came up with the Bible quote used in the film!

The new series of Line of Duty is really testing me by casting Stephen Graham alongside Martin Compston.

I didn’t know Jean Dujardin played a pilot.

Re: Dermot Mulroney or Dylan McDermott: A Field Guide
From the interview I linked above:
McDERMOTT: I remember Sue Mengers coming up to me in the hallway, saying, “There can’t be two of you. There can only be one. One of you is going to have to change your name.” So I’ve been waiting for 30 years for Dermot to change his name. [Laughs.]
MULRONEY: We’ve never had this conversation, Dylan. There was a moment while I was represented at that agency where that came up. I gave it some thought. I really did. Naturally, it made sense for me to use the last name McDermott, because Dermot’s in that last name. The first name Dermot that I would be relinquishing by changing the name. I just slipped it into the last name, McDermott, the one that you have.
McDERMOTT: So you were going to be Dermot McDermot?
MULRONEY: No — I was going to go by Matthew McDermot. Matthew was my confirmation name.
McDERMOTT: Hey, get this! I was also going to do it. You know what my name was going to be?
MULRONEY: What?
McDERMOTT: Mick Dermot.
MULRONEY: Oh, I’m so glad you didn’t do that. That would have been so confusing!
McDERMOTT: Yeah, right — like the 30 years haven’t been. [Laughs.]
