Film Quizzes
A work colleague and I often do quizzes on a website called Sporcle during our work break. A lot of these are film related, so I thought they would make a good thread here.
To start with, what sort of score do people get on this quiz that asks for the names of 100 directors based on three given films. I got 78, just barely remembering Forman in time.
[If a mod feels that this should be elsewhere or isn't a suitable thread, then feel free to action it.]

Re: Film Quizzes
That was a fun one! I got 95, but had to cheat to get the spelling right on two of them (Kieślowski (wasted almost five minutes on this before I just googled his name) and Szabo). And cannot believe I couldn't remember Tony Richardson's name.

Most of you have probably seen it already, but I always enjoyed the Empire Magazine movie poster font quiz

After getting my ego stroked with a whopping 100% at not quite 8 minutes, I noticed the link with the distribution of the results and it's very interesting who is today known and who isn't http://www.sporcle.com/games/anchors_aw ... rs/results" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . A friend of mine who is writing a doctor thesis on Siodmak won't be pleased.RobertAltman wrote:That was a fun one!

Re: Film Quizzes
I got to 96 - blanked on the director of Let the Right One In and couldn't remember Joseph Mankiewicz's middle initial.
It doesn't help that the quiz misspells two directors' names, when I'd typed them in correctly - "Lindsey" Anderson and missing the first Z in Krzysztof Kieslowski. (It didn't need the diacritic over the first S in his surname.)

Re: Film Quizzes
I got 87: I blanked out on the director of Let The Right One In and the rest were mostly down to the names of famous Golden Era Hollywood directors eluding me at the crucial moment:
though I did get Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Fred Zinnermann and Max Ophuls but couldn't get the spelling of their surnames right before the time ran out on me!
I have my suspicion (not at all because I'm grumpy with my result!) that the quiz was designed around directors with the most difficult to spell names! This is only compounded by spending at least five minutes continually typing Krzysztof Kieslowski's name over and over into the box without it being accepted, eventually going into the other room and literally transcribing it off my boxset of the Three Colours trilogy to no effect, only to find on the results page that the quiz had spelt his name wrong as "Kryzsztof" and that was why it wasn't accepting it. (Ah, I see GaryC had the same problem!)
Not that I'm bitter!

Robert Siodmak, Lewis Milestone, William Dieterle, Michael Curtiz, King Vidor and Busby Berkeley. I'd suggest it is the choice of films to represent them that did it. I'd have gotten Siodmak straight away if The Killers, Cobra Woman or Criss Cross had been in there!

I should maybe mention that it's enough to enter the surnames to pass the test.

The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry was a really obscure pick for Siodmak, but it should be on the radars of fans of his work now, as it's finally about to get a legit release (from Olive).

Just got 90 % It's a bugger that you have to get the exact right spelling . I wasted about 2 hours trying to get Aronofsky right.

98/100, I only missed I finished with plenty of time left, but I knew I didn't know these two so I just hit "give up" when finished. Pretty fun!

97/100. I missed the same ones domino did, plus Richardson. Admittedly had to cheat on spelling for Mankiewicz, Siodmak, and Berkeley (too man e's!). Almost missed the Vidor one, because the clues are far from the first films I think about regarding him.

I got Szabo but missed two American directors that I'm ashamed to admit. Mostly I'm proud that I knew how to spell so many of their names.

Re: Film Quizzes
I've been using Sporcle for years - its a great way to challenge yourself on all variety of topics.
Since this is the Criterion Forum after all, how do we do on these:
Name the Criterion Covers (by portion of their cover) parts 1, 2 and 3 - part 3 is perhaps the best of those.
Name the Criterion releases 1-100
There's also hilarious quizzes like:
Can you pick the things Meat Loaf actually WOULD do for love?

Re: Film Quizzes
I got 96/100 on the directors. I spent a loooong time on Ken Russell because when I quickly read "The Devils, Women in Love," my brain picked it up as "The Devil Is a Woman," and I frustratedly kept typing Sternberg and wondered why it wasn't accepting it. That was a lot of fun, though!

Re: Film Quizzes
Criterion releases 1 to 100 I got 85. But it wouldn't accept sid and Nancy it has to be an ampersand, and I wasted a minute trying to spell Nancy different ways and finally gave up. It also wouldn't accept beastie boys as an answer and every article had to be present unlike other quizzes I had to go back and add the or a to the beginning of answers. Irtitating

Re: Film Quizzes
Ended up with only 87 directors, missing out mostly on such well known directors like Mann, Reiner, or the Coen Brothers. Still I'm embarassed that I couldn't remember who directed "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Couldn't they have chosen "Eine Stunde Glück" or "Adorable" instead?
And only 10% of people knew Ophuls? Sigh...

Re: Film Quizzes
Scored 96 - missed Kieslowski (couldn't quite remember his name, probably because his films leave me cold), Linklater (not seen those particular movies), Alfredson and Aronofsky, both of whom are virtually unknown to me. I was pleased to find I had difficulty recalling "Quentin Tarantino"...
About 35 years ago, I won a long film quiz hosted by the Warwick University Film Society, held in the giant but packed lecture theatre which they used for 35mm screenings. My prize was The 50 Worst Movies of All Time - the book, not the movies themselves... this being almost pre-VHS days, let alone DVD!

Sure sounds like a lot of folks need to see Mephisto -- a terrific film, with a great performance by Klaus Maria Brandauer, and one of my all-time favorite endings.
It even won an Oscar. Get cracking.

Luckily you can get away with surnames only on this so no need to worry about spelling Krzysztof
