Re: TV of 2014
HBO's new OTT service will be powered by MLBAM, who does the same for the WWE Network, among other services. Should be interesting how it will compare with how the Network has done, considering that will likely go in more homes in it's first couple of months than WWE's has done up to now. It also says the service will debut in the Spring.

David Fincher and James Ellroy working together on Shakedown for HBO, and Fincher will direct the pilot for the network's Living on Noise, making that three projects he's working on in 2015 for HBO.

James May's recent Toy Stories special is quite good and as usual in spirit with the show's aspirations of bringing the fantasies we had about our toys to life, including the kind of flash and bang pyrotechnics young boys can only dream of accomplishing with them. May himself is quite capable of carrying a show on his own shoulders, as he did earlier this year with his Cars of the People mini-series and his many other shows for the BBC.

Mixed feelings on Sonic Highways so far. It gets interesting until it becomes about the Foo Fighters' new record and the songs which don't pick up much of the flavor of the city each one is recorded in at all. The major disappointment so far is that they didn't cover what the punk scene in Nashvile was like...

Re: TV of 2014
I really haven’t had the patience or interest to dive into this apparent children’s cartoon renaissance going on these past years beyond a few stray episodes, but I watched Over the Garden Wall and would wholeheartedly recommend it. I saw it called the “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea of cartoons” a while ago and lyrics aside that’s not far off. The world of the show is a melting pot of old Americana, from colonial folk horror to an episode riffing on 1930s cartoons. It’s the only thing that comes to mind for an American version of medieval fantasy. It shares the same pervasive sense of melancholic nostalgia for times past too, but never to the point of some latter Adveture Time episodes where they’ve clearly stopped aiming for an audience of kids instead of young adults. There’s a few weaker chapters and the resolution can feel obvious but at 110 minutes there’s really nothing that’s worth removing. Good stuff and a shame CN hasn’t made any similar attempts at a miniseries since, to my knowledge.
