The endless "I want you to come"s were good, but I was more surprised by the following week's episode and its devotion to gay subcultures, both real and fictional. I am shocked that any network TV show managed to work the term "power bottom" past the censors. Add to that "twinks" and "bull dykes" (I think they danced around the word "dyke" though, can't remember), though no such luck with "fag hag," which clearly got compromised in transition, but stillMurdoch wrote:I'm surprised they got away with all those Dave jokes in "Fowl Play/Date" but no one's watching anyway. Would love it if the writers said screw the censors and used what may well be their last season to go all out.

After seven episodes I'm with LQ on this one. Does it morph into something vastly better/more complex after half a season, a la Cougar Town or Community, or can I quit?

I dunno, at least watch the kickball episode before you bail.
Also, am I the only one who assumes every time that someone posts here that it's to announce that the show has been canceled?

No, I'm in the same boat as you (I assume it's because we're going scuba-diving with Brad and Brent Musburger. "Hold up! That's a puffer-fish."). I'm dreading that news, which seems inevitable.swo17 wrote:Also, am I the only one who assumes every time that someone posts here that it's to announce that the show has been canceled?

Re: Happy Endings
The one hopeful thing to me (beyond the obvious Sony/syndication thing we discussed to death with Community back when we cared if it continued on) is that ABC cancelled Don't Trust the B---- weeks ago now and nothing has been uttered about actually cancelling Happy Endings - they actually seem to be shifting it around the schedule to death in order to keep it afloat without causing too much financial/ratings harm to the network.
ABC owns the other half of the series with Sony, and they owned the rights to Scrubs - that was a low rated show that ABC seemed to adore the idea of squeezing as much syndication money out of as possible - they even rescued it on their own network after NBC cancelled it after 7 seasons - plenty of time to syndicate, but they just wanted to get a bit more out of it and let it run for two more years, practically begging the main cast to stay on and overpaying guys like Zach Braff in order to do it.
So I don't know - this could certainly be cancelled, but I think that Sony and ABC see syndication potential in it - it would fit right in with Scrubs in a syndication block on Comedy Central in a few years and would surely make both entities money in the long run. The cast can't make that much money compared to a typical big-name sitcom ensemble, and if they kept it alive on Friday nights for another year or two, it couldn't cause too much of a problem for them in the short term, right?

The Deadline article seems to indicate that Sony is pushing it hard to other networks. I'm hopeful

Why do people who hate TV so much run TV networks?

We live in a world where the USA network would rather foist another Denis Leary show on us than Happy Endings

Shame, although as an off-and-on viewer of Rescue Me it did have some truly great moments (I've never seen anything on TV like the opening to season 6 and doubt I ever will again), but I hold no hope for a Leary series on USA. The merits of Rescue Me came chiefly from FX allowing it to go through all levels of depravity (few actors would be eager to write themselves into as despicable and pathetic a role as Tommy Gavin).

Todd VanDerWerff confirmed at AV Club that USA passed on Happy Endings but Sony's shopping it around to a few other channels and streaming platforms. Seems that there really are dedicated fans of this show on a corporate level who want to see it go forward (or just want those syndication counts) so I guess I still have a little naive optimism

Re: Happy Endings
The silence in the last couple weeks said it all. Another masterful show that people will only discover once it's too late. At least we had three seasons' worth of hilarity-- not every canceled before its time masterpiece gets that much! Still, to every network that stopped this from continuing:

I didn't think it carved out enough new territory to qualify as a masterpiece, but I did start to like it more towards the end of the first season, and was rooting for it. Wayans, Cuthbert, and Eliza Coupe were all hilarious.

Re: Happy Endings
I don't know, three seasons is the best length for a sitcom imo and I kinda thought the series was growing a little stale since Alex and Dave got back together.

Re: Happy Endings
But they ended up splitting them up again (hope that's not really a spoiler after this long), which I thought was a smart move. It would have been nice to see what their interaction would have been like after a more-amicable break-up.

The Happy Endings writing staff have been posting rejected and alternate lines from the series' run on their Twitter. Some of the runs of gags they conjured are unreal

Eliza Coupe slumming it on the Will Arnett/Margo Martindale fartcom the Millers That means 4/6 of the cast members already have projects lined up. Dave and Alex, alone again!

OK, as someone never seeing this show but hearing good things about it...is it worth watching? It sounds like a sinking ship.
