Aren't the book reduction the answer to increased production costs for booklets and increased transportation costs ?

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
Why don't they print just the blu-ray sized booklets and put those on dvds as well? Isn't that what MOC used to do?

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
I thought many here blamed the dual format fiasco, at least in part. I have no special knowledge, so my statement could be wrong.tenia wrote:Aren't the book reduction the answer to increased production costs for booklets and increased transportation costs ?

I just looked at Criterion.com, and L'eclisse is labelled as "Buy on Amazon.com". Dunno if that means anything, but it doesn't help that the third-party sellers boosted the price up to $400.

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
It probably just means they're out of the dual format edition, and will be rereleasing it in separate blu and dvd editions.Yaanu wrote:I just looked at Criterion.com, and L'eclisse is labelled as "Buy on Amazon.com". Re: Criterion and Dual Format
That's my favorite film and I'm heartened that enough people would purchase it such that it would go OOP, but I suppose it's equally likely that their initial run was low or that people just like staring at Alain Delon or Monica Vitti seeking spiritual succor (they sold out of L'Avventura posters in their shop as well).

SCANNERS is also going to be on a Blu-ray only edition on March 28. The Criterion website has a preorder up.

Is there anyway of knowing if the packaging for Ace in the Hole is changing before the release?

I just saw it in store and the BD-only edition comes in a plastic caseFrauBlucher wrote: ↑Wed Aug 22, 2018 7:16 pmIs there anyway of knowing if the packaging for Ace in the Hole is changing before the release?

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
Thanks. I’m on a mission to replace my dual format digipaks to the blu only if they are getting re-released in the plastic cases.

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
There are some dual-formats being released in slightly thicker plastic cases. I was at B&N earlier today and noticed that Judex and two other titles I can't remember are still dual-format, but no longer digipakked.

I believe Judex was a plastic case from the get-go.

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
It's worth noting that the Dual Format version can no longer be ordered at criterion.com, which suggests all stock has been sent to retailers.FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:14 pmAll that Jazz will no longer be dual format as of Jan 29th. Bluray.com
Same goes for All That Heaven Allows, which suggests a split re-issue coming soon.

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
I just read that Vinegar Syndrome is now only putting out Blu-rays, discontinuing DVD production. Could there ever be a chance that Criterion would make this move as well at some point?

I thought that they were dropping DVD-only releases and switching over to the dual-format model?flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 11, 2018 5:57 pmI just read that Vinegar Syndrome is now only putting out Blu-rays, discontinuing DVD production.

Personally I still think it's a shame Criterion didn't stick with Dual Format for longer than it did.VS Newsletter wrote:As we close out our 6th year, we've seen a lot of changes in what you like, dislike, buy and don't buy. As such, to adapt to those changes, we're trying something new in 2019: ALL BLU-RAY (combo packs). Yes, starting in January, every single title we release will be issued on Blu, in combo pack form with a matching DVD. So, in case there's any lingering confusion, we will no longer be doing any DVD-only releases of anything...

Re: Criterion and Dual Format
It seems like one of these goes every 6 months. Probably when the initial print run finally sells out. There's probably a few that are still Dual Format due to licensing reasons, so probably won't be split / might end up Blu-Ray only (like Zatoichi). That said, I still wonder when Criterion will finally just go Blu only for everything.
Just a reminder to everyone that I still keep track of the status of Dual Formats at the FAQ Thread (and yes, I desperately need to update the digipack + booklet lists)

I hated the dual releases and glad Criterion stopped. I din't need and extra DVD... just to throw in the garbage. I tried giving them away and no one wanted them.

You are both aware the case holds both and there's no reason to discard the extra disc? Okay, great
