MoC OOP

#1 Post by Neonatica » Tue Aug 03, 2010 11:23 am

Unfortunately, Eureka has confirmed that Abhijan is OOP (and it's the only one missing in my collection!)

I thought only Savage Innocents was OOP. Are there any more 'hidden' OOPs?

The Rene Laloux dvds are due to go out of print - Fantastic Planet, Gandahar and Les maitres du temps.

I'm pretty sure Vengeance is Mine is OOP on DVD.

Of course the Fantastic Planet BD will replace the OOP SD. But losing Gandahar and Maitres du Temps - I know they undersold, but I don't know why.

What about Sunrise, Mad Detective, Tokyo Sonata, Une femme mariée, For All Mankind and Soul Power? All OOP?

What are you driving at? All I was saying was, though the SD version of Fantastic Planet is gone, the reissue on Blu is there, so it's not "really" OOP. Nothing more implied.

I don't think it's much of a surprise that most MoC releases won't see a reprint, so technically I guess most releases are 'OoP'. I was wondering more which releases are sold out.

You're paranoid, I was asking a legitimate question.

The titles you mentioned (SUNRISE, TOKYO SONATA, MAD DETECTIVE, SOUL POWER, M etc) all received simultaneous separate DVD and Blu-ray releases.

The two new releases, VENGEANCE IS MINE BD and LA PLANETE SAUVAGE BD, already had 4 or 5 year old DVD editions and have not received new simultaneous DVD editions. Hence their DVDs will be slowly going OOP as soon as stock is gone.

Having said that, I think it's pretty safe to say that TOKYO SONATA, MAD DETECTIVE and SOUL POWER will not receive DVD represses, but will receive BD represses in the future, should they need them.

Titles such as SUNRISE and M will probably continue to have DVD represses (as well as BD represses) should they need them. But circumstances change every month, so don't hold me to any of this. This is just how things are in August 2010.

So, what other films are near the end of their pressing and won't get another in the future? (those that won't be getting Bluray editions)

What I know at the moment is:

OOP (rights):

Gandahar
The Savage Innocents

OOP (won't get repressed):

Abhijan
Vengeance is Mine (DVD)

Future OOP (not repressed):

Mad Detective (DVD)
Soul Power (DVD)
Tokyo Sonata (DVD)

Also I've heard mention that Tabu and Edvard Munch will fare similar to Abhijan (it's not getting a secret Bluray upgrade now is it? :P ) and not be repressed? I might also assume that For All Mankind and Une Femme Mariee (DVD) will go OOP as the pressing ends? Anything else that I missed or anything nearing OOP status? It sorta feels as though any non-Bluray upgraded title (minus the heavy hitters like Metropolis/Sunrise/etc) will be phased out in the future? I'll use that line to cause mass panic amongst everyone- causing sales to spike.

Edit: Is Michael OOP?

This is more accurate:

OOP
The Savage Innocents (went OOP late 2006 due to still contentious rights issues)
Abhijan (went OOP in 2010 due to poor sales and no appetite for a repress)
Gandahar (went OOP in 2010 due to poor sales and no appetite for a repress)
Michael (went OOP in 2010 due to poor sales and no appetite for a repress)

Likely to go OOP when current press runs out
Mad Detective DVD only (not BD)
Soul Power DVD only (not BD)
Tokyo Sonata DVD only (not BD)
Vengeance is Mine DVD only (not BD)
Fantastic Planet DVD only (not BD)
Une Femme Mariee DVD only (not BD)

We're likely to keep the DVDs of SUNRISE, M, FOR ALL MANKIND, TABU, and EDVARD MUNCH in print.

I almost feel guilty that one of my childhood favorites (Gandahar) has caused you some degree of grief.

How has Les Maitres du temps faired?

Could we have some sort of Endangered species watch list? (other than the above one kindly posted) Having been buying MOC for less than a year- I feel like I'm too late to the show on a lot of these.

A 'Running Low' / 'Last Chance' section (yes, I've just been looking at the Mosaic website after Matt's prompt elsewhere) on the sale pages would be useful, and I think we can count on Nick and Co. not being too cynical about exploiting it.

Not that these 'running low' titles need to be heavily discounted, but just to let the customers know.

Yes, a bit of notice would be nice. I feel bad I never got round to picking Michael or Abhijan up before they went oop, in an ideal world I'd own every MoC but, they aren't the only dvd company, I'll definitely aim to pick up more from these sales now and try and get the missing titles from my collection. I hope the Ray and Dreyer appear in the upcoming sale!!!

Do you have any stock for Michael (and Gandahar) left? I'd hate to think that so many of the films that caused me to go all region are getting the bucket just as turn over. Though I do like the idea of a what we won't repress list somewhere.

If we are putting a title OOP because we've decided not to repress, it does coincide with us having no or very little stock. The need to repress is the impetus which causes the decision. We are not taking these decisions lightly -- it's a basic choice between spending thousands of pounds to repress each one, and to pay for storage of that stock for years, to see only a handful sell each month. It doesn't make sense, unless you have limitless funds and you can afford to have the money sat in a warehouse. We'd rather move on and invest that money in new titles.

So we have pretty much zero stock of MICHAEL, ABHIJAN, and GANDAHAR.

We're having to make harsh decisions like this, to maximise our clout on new acquisitions/editions, and to prevent money effectively being wasted/lost on poor selling titles. They've had their chance, we don't regret releasing them, but they didn't sell well.

Rather than keeping an up-to-date public running commentary of our stock levels, I'd rather just drop the bomb when the OOP decision gets made. Even if I say which titles sold "badly/ok/not bad" it doesn't give much indication of imminent OOPness. Something like the NARUSE box sold well at first, then really tailed off. It's sold badly, but we have lots left.

Hope this makes sense.

No, the Naruse box selling badly makes no sense at all, but there it is.

Don't college libraries in the UK (and the like) buy classic DVD sets like the Naruse one?

It's a shame that a film and a package of Michael's quality is likely to go OOP. Of course I can't blame MoC if repressing it would burn a hole in their pocket. It was the very first MoC title I ever bought and I remember being so enamoured with the booklet design that, while skimming it upon opening the case, I ended up reading the entire thing then and there. I guess the rest of these OOP notices don't effect me personally because after Michael I started buying up the whole collection.

It's a shame Gandahar and Les Maitres du temps haven't sold well. With their colourful cover-art and sci-fi stories I'd have thought they'd be among the more likely in the collection to grab the attention of casual browsers.

Michael, I looked into it a few years ago. Educational establishments in the UK can only buy from one of two accredited specialist suppliers and unless you're on their books, there's no foot in the door. Seemed like a closed shop - but we may have got involved with one of the suppliers, I can't recall. Then we'd have to target each educational establishment's buyer directly. It's the sort of dedicated pinpointing that we need to do, legwork which needs pursuing.

Unfortunately, the MoC team just deal with the disc production. Eureka deal with sales and they'd rather us release better known titles because they sell more off the bat.
