Welp, that's just expensive, then. :-|
And that dedicated bonus disc probably is only there to make the pill easier to swallow, but it's hard not to think these relatively short extras couldn't have been included on the other 3 discs.
Oh well.

That's so disappointing that this won't be English friendly. What do you suppose are the odds Pathé UK will do their own release of this?

If no other UK distributor already owns the rights or the sublicence, your best hope might be that MoC acquire it. Wooden Crosses and Les Miserables are both Pathe licences if I recall correctly (I don't have my French Blus at hand). If not MoC, then Arrow Academy.

I’m almost more surprised to see that this release has no German subtitles, given that the 2019 LA ROUE is a Franco-German restoration. Indeed, German subtitles were displayed at the Berlin premiere and available for the subsequent broadcast on ARTE. Perhaps there will be a German DVD/Blu-ray release at some point? Not that this is any more likely to have English subtitles, but it’s a possibility.

I’m glad that they seem to be including Blaise Cendrars’ AUTOUR DE LA ROUE among their extras, though it doesn’t look as if their copy will be any different from the version included on the Flicker Alley DVD. (The ARTE documentary on the restoration credited the clips from AUTOUR DE LA ROUE to Flickey Alley/Lobster.) Cendrars’ film was originally rather longer than the single-reel (approx. 10-minute) version currently available. An archival document lists four times as many intertitles than contained in the extant version, and the film was advertised in the press as being “in two parts” when shown in 1923 – suggesting it was at least two reels long. Oh well – more of it may turn up one day…

Update on the Pathé La Roue:
The box now comes with a 140 page book, "Cahiers d´une restauration" by Francois Ede, with texts by principal collaborators.
English and German subtitles will be included.
Release delayed from 15 to 29 April.
There will be a 4-disc dvd edition and a 4-disc bluray edition.

I've tried ordering the restored La Roue from Amazon.fr and then Cede.com. The former won't ship to the US and the latter does not display USA on its address dropdown (though it includes a whole lot of other countries). I seem to recall some squabble that resulted in what I believe was Amazon.fr not shipping to the USA, but - is this more widespread in France?

I've ordered something from Amazon.fr a few weeks ago (but the package is yet to show up in the US), so I don't think it's a general thing even for Amazon.fr?

Received La roue today. While I have not opened it yet, the back cover confirms what's been posted above: it does have English and German subtitles. Also region free.

No matter how hard I try I cannot exorcise the looming presence of Thomas the Tank engine on the box front. Why can't we have reversible box set covers too?

Are the supplements subtitled as well, or just the intertitles on the main feature?

I'd love more info about the packaging, if anyone cares to share. It's hard to gauge how big the box is from the few pictures I've seen online.

Going off Pathe's track record, this should have English subtitles. Fingers crossed anyway! Hopefully it bodes well for a restoration and release of La petite Lise...

Does anyone know what the likelihood is that the new restoration of La Roue will get a US- or UK-friendly release? The Pathé edition is now out of stock everywhere. I have tried ordering a copy through Fnac twice; the first time it said it was in stock and then the order got canceled. I reordered it when it said it was back in stock, and now my expected ship date has been pushed to January. At this point I would just prefer Kino or MoC to put out their own edition.

Re-release of La Roue Jan. 6, 2021:

Specs say the book will be included in this reedition. Hopefully that is correct.

Reported here by Tenia (posts Oct. 15 and 16,2020) and others:
https://www.dvdclassik.com/forum/viewto ... start=1845
Tenia says the new pressing is 1 000 Blurays and 1 000 DVDs.

From what Pathé said a few days ago, it looks like it'll the same product, but a second batch of it. It looks like Pathé has vastly underestimated how much they'd sold of this and have only done 500 BD sets and 500 DVD sets for the first batch. And it sold out pretty much in 3 months.
Needless to say they're very happy by this result.

Pathé had 3 releases planned for March 21 : Cadet Rousselle, L'étrange monsieur Victor & Copie conforme. Cadet Rousselle has ultimately been cancelled (despite check discs existing for this release) because Pathé felt the restoration (which is sourced from an incomplete OCN, completed with various sources including an exploitation print) isn't good-looking enough.

M. Victor looks great, and I’m thrilled there are English subs. The little documentary about Cayenne is a cool addition, but I wish someone would restore Grémillon’s own non-fiction work for one of these. Oh well, still need to order this one when Amazon.fr lets me combine with the new Rivettes.
