Wanda Whips Wall Street DVD

Image

Before the Wolf of Wall Street, there was Wanda!

Larry Revene, one of the best adult film cinematographers of all time, took to the director's chair for this wild and wonderful tale of sexual intrigue and economic espionage. Legendary superstar Veronica Hart gives one of her funniest and hottest performances as the scheming small town financial wizard who treks to New York to work her magic at one of the top investment firms in the city. Teaming with her girl Friday Janie (Tish Ambrose), Wanda sleeps her way through the company’s stock holders, using blackmail to absorb their shares. Corporate investigator Lou Perrini (Jamie Gillis) and his assistant Ed (Ron Jeremy) set out to uncover the culprits behind this corporate crime spree. Featuring appearances by adult film legends Samantha Fox, George Payne, Sharon Mitchell, Ron Hudd, and cult favorite Sondra Hillman, this is sophisticated sex comedy as its finest.

Wanda Whips Wall Street was scanned in 2k resolution and encoded for DVD. The source material was a 35mm theatrical print. Although many hours of color correction and digital scratch removal have been performed, there are still instances of scratches/splices, etc. The film is now presented in it's original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 for the first time on home video.

Image

One of the greatest box sets of all time, own all 5 Henry Paris films in one shot.

The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann
(1974) Radley Metzger's first artful foray into hard-core filmmaking, Pamela Mann exudes the dirty elegance of mid-1970's NYC. The plot follows a private detective named Frank who is employed by a wealthy businessman to investigate the sexual infidelities of his socialite wife, Pamela. the non-stop excitement includes a casual hook-up on Sutton Place, doing social work with a prostitute, a political cocktail party, a staged abduction and eventual seduction of Frank himself!

Naked Came The Stranger
(1975) Sizzling sex, stunning cinematography, and Metzger’s trademark humor make Naked Came The Stranger, an undisputed classic from the golden age. set in swinging 1970’s New York, the film follows the sexual exploits of radio host Gillian Blake, as she sets out to even the score with her philandering husband, Billy. Highlights include a lavish costume party, the Rudolph Valentino tango, a hilarious twist on s&m, and a very memorable bus ride down Madison Ave!

The Opening of Misty Beethoven
(1976) Widely considered to be the greatest adult film of all time, the award winning Misty Beethoven is the apex of porno chic! basing the film on the classic story Pygmalion, Metzger transplants the action to 1970’s New York, Rome, and Paris as we follow noted sexologist Dr. Seymour Love, as he sets himself the challenge of transforming a lowly streetwalker, into the world’s greatest lover. Stunning cinematography, an incredible soundtrack, and some of the hottest sex scenes ever.

Barbara Broadcast
(1977) Many consider Barbara Broadcast to be the most professional porn film ever shot- witty, sophisticated & erotic. Filmed in NYC’s most unusual restaurant, the Olympia ballroom, where the waiters/waitresses serve more than just food, the film begins with the rendezvous of Barbara Broadcast (celebrity sex expert) and a hot-blooded reporter and follows thier ensuing adventures- an orgy of sexual feasting. The film is packed full of elaborate settings, superb dialogue and hot sex.

Maraschino Cherry
(1979) Metzger’s swan song to the genre, Maraschino Cherry- is a sparkling example of what made him famous; decadent settings, beautiful people, humorous dialogue- and sizzling eroticism of the highest order. A madame takes on the task of initiating her younger sister into the world of running a pricey house of prostitution. The action includes passion at a piano bar, the infamous matador scene, and an s&m-dungeon sequence that is one of the hottest of all time.

Figured these guys deserve a thread if VinSyn gets one. They seem to be moving towards a similar style of releasing. The Sweetheart Theatres line appears to be their version of VS's Peekarama.

The Blu-rays of The Opening of Misty Beethoven and Barbara Broadcast are still available, though apparently are close to going out of print. The other three Henry Paris/Radley Metzger films are planned for Blu-ray next year according to a recent blog post, but they have yet to decide how to release these (individually, all 3 in a box set, or all 5 in a box set).

I'm kind of fascinated by Refn showing up to do commentaries for porn, when he didn't bother to do one for Drive- what's his connection here?

Maybe it's like all those Soderbergh commentaries where he invites a colleague to interview him/press him for details rather than sit by himself. Lustig also owns Blue Underground and his bombastic style of filmmaking isn't far from Refn's, perhaps he's a fan or a friend?

He may have owned the prints for these films. Something similar happened on the Flipside release for those Andy Milligan films.

I haven't listened to them yet but Refn is helping produce a new Maniac Cop film with Lustig, so clearly he's a fan. But I think the commentaries came first as they were recorded all the way back in 2010, during the filming of Drive.

There is a podcast with Lustig and Distribpix owner Steven Morowitz here.

There is an explanation at the end of the podcast. Lustig and Refn are long time friends and shared an apartment in NYC for 5 years, and it was during this period that Refn petitioned Lustig to gets these films out, promising to do commentaries with him if it ever happened.

Refn also has form in helping out adventurous release programmes - the BFI Flipside series owes much of its recent output to his patronage.

And, at least according to the Drive thread, he has done a commentary for that film but it is only on a Japanese release.

I may partake in the Lustig stuff and the Opening of Misty Beethoven. I don't have a ton of adult stuff. I have a decent copy of Barbara Broadcast with commentary by Jamie Gillis and Beyond the Green Door. Most of the adult stuff I have was burned and sold to me by Robin Bougie of Cinema Sewer. The one movie I would like to see is The Devil in Miss Jones, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere.

The Devil in Miss Jones is available on DVD at adult-film-friendly e-tailers like TLA Video and CD Universe. It's one of the more unique and ambitious films from the golden age of hard-core and is definitely worth seeing, though my preference is for Misty Beethoven. Metzger's Score is also wonderful.

Unless they've remastered it in the last decade, the DVD of The Devil in Miss Jones is truly atrocious quality.

Yes, my DVD copy is pretty terrible but until someone should decide to remaster it it's the only available option. Sadly, it's typical of the quality of adult films available on DVD. Many look no better than a VHS tape. Misty Beethoven, Score and Boys in the Sand have undergone extensive restorations in recent years but my assumption is that very, very few other adult films will be seen as important enough to warrant that kind of preservation work going forward.

Anyone know of a good place to get the Misty Beethoven Blu? Distribpix looks to have it direct, but their international shipping is a bit high. Everywhere else it seems to be unavailable.
