This is the last Wes Anderson film to be released on Blu-ray, isn't it? Any plans for this? Hasn't this been hinted at in like several of Criterions pictures?

It is in the works according to Anderson - don't have a direct link but I'd expect it sometime this year if I were you. The DVD transfer is abysmal (much like The Royal Tenenbaums was), so it can't come soon enough.

Now that Criterion is done with Image, is there a chance this might not be upgraded to Blu?

There's no reason for that as the licensing has nothing to do with Image.

I was incredibly close (and extremely loud) to snapping and buying this back out of impatience for the Blu-Ray upgrade. Thank god the nearest used DVD store didn't have any copies.

I remember all the hate this film got from the press upon its release for the exact reason his films get praised now. Hope the re-release will create lots of renewed enthusiasm for the film. Its always been one of my favorites and can't wait to revisit it again.

Most dishes are better with salt. How much you use dictates the degree of response. So, I wouldn't say it's "the exact reason"

1 disc only according to Amazon ?

I guess going DF is not as straight-forward as Criterion thought it would be.

They said up front that there would still be separate blu-only upgrades from time to time. I'm guessing Disney wasn't interested in a dual package?

Noticed the Blu-ray has new features as well:

•New interviews with actors Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Jeff Goldblum

All three of whom are in The Grand Budapest Hotel and just did the press junket in Berlin. Makes you wonder if someone from Criterion was on hand during the making of the film or at the junket. Could be that they're already putting some stuff together for the eventual release of that film.

They've been tweeting and retweeting about it, Grand Beauty style.

The interviews have been removed from the list of special features, unfortunately.

Perhaps they weren't any good and Anderson decided not to include them? It can't possibly be a rights issue.

So if I've got this right looking at my DVD copy against the Criterion site, the only things new here are the 4k transfer and lossless soundtrack (though without the not 5.1 Dolby option), as well as the removal of the Starz behind-the-scenes featurette?

Chris' review implies that the Starz featurette is still present.

Looks like we got the removed interviews after all. Maybe they just ran out of space on the BD?

There is around 1-2 Gb left on the disc, and if this is not enough for 7 min of extras, they could surely have compressed a tiny bit more each extras to make more disc space available.

I could have done without the Starz EPK if it meant putting it in.

Easily my favorite Anderson film. Glad to see a definitive release.

As crazy and ridiculous as this sounds, could it have been a rights issue with that little sound from the iPhone dictionary app at the end?
