The menu art... seriously, has this artist ever seen these actors before?

Is the "new conversation" featurette literally a Zoom call? Because that's what it looks like on DVDBeaver.

Probably. We're gonna see a lot more of that on releases being worked on in 2020-2021.ianthemovie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 5:01 pmIs the "new conversation" featurette literally a Zoom call? Because that's what it looks like on DVDBeaver.

The menu art should have been the cover. At least it looks more like Fonda there.

It wouldn’t surprise me over the next few months if we saw more extras like this or of the sort Kim Newman produces where he does everything himself from home

I'd expect there to be an uptick in audio only interviews that play out over stills and clips. Maybe it is time for Criterion to start doing their old style audio commentaries again.

If After Yang is as great as Columbus, it's gonna be really weird to continue to both love and hate this guy's expression of artistic talent/"talent"

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
Either of these would be preferable to whatever they've done to the Lady Eve roundtable. Let us pray that we're not subjected to Claire Denis discussing Beau Travail with Barry Jenkins via a tiled video call screen.

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
Er... why such a strong reaction? I'd assume Criterion had the individual participants do QA checks of sound/video quality and had their individual recordings of the chat sent by the participants to be assembled together rather than it being actually recorded online. There is absolutely no way these people would every have been able to get together in the same room to discuss the movie, so you'd rather they just... don't try? I think it's fun, and the circumstances allowed them to maybe rope in a few more A-tier talking heads then they'd usually be able to get for one feature.ianthemovie wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 11:09 amEither of these would be preferable to whatever they've done to the Lady Eve roundtable. Provided quality control is applied, I don't have a problem at all with this video call arrangement going forward. It potentially means that contributors who wouldn't manage to come together for whatever reason can do so, and presumably is a more economical option for labels than sending a cameraman across the country or further.

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
Nicely done! It has the potential to be even more salacious, so bravo for keeping it just slightly lascivious. I really get a kick out of the puns for name-brand reviewers/sites.
I enjoy seeing their homes/offices in the background images; interesting variety of artwork! Is Kenneth Turan (I think that's him in the center square) using one of those standard Zoom backgrounds, or is that his real (brightly lit, wall-of-windows, vaulted ceiling) home?ianthemovie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 5:01 pmIs the "new conversation" featurette literally a Zoom call? I enjoy perusing the bookshelves visible in video images when some of the critics, authors, and scholars speak from their homes and offices; interesting that some put their own books in prominent spots to advertise, but others seemingly show random collections. My boys have loved Newman's column in Empire magazine for years, and they get a kick out of seeing him speak, his unique and flamboyant clothing, and especially pausing the video to examine what he has on his shelves and walls.domino harvey wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 9:03 pmIt wouldn’t surprise me over the next few months if we saw more extras like this or of the sort Kim Newman produces where he does everything himself from home

Me and my GF love looking at the background shelves ans see what books or movies these are. We regularly discover stuff or themes to look into.

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
I'm very pleased indeed with Kier-La Janisse's featurette on Joy Bang for Indicator's Cisco Pike, which was self-filmed on an iPad under lockdown conditions. We did technical tests with her in advance and reckoned it would be OK, at least in terms of there being nothing distracting in terms of AV quality - and happily this turned out to be the case.domino harvey wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 9:03 pmIt wouldn’t surprise me over the next few months if we saw more extras like this or of the sort Kim Newman produces where he does everything himself from home
Obviously, there are no plans to make this arrangement permanent or even regular, but in this case it was a very practical alternative to simply cancelling the piece or delaying the disc. And in many ways the rough-and-ready approach suited the subject very well.

Ha! I think Brooks is in the left center square, with the painting of the three pears over his left shoulder. But we could score a tic-tac-toe win using three look-alike white men with glasses, gray beards, and receding hairlines. Or a slot-machine jackpot.

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
Excellent! Another hidden treasure from this forum. This place just keeps on giving; there are entire kevyipian threads I will never get to.
So if Sturges had dropped Susan King, Ron Shelton and Captain A̶s̶c̶o̶t̶ Bandana from his "friends" and instead included David Bordwell, John Landis, Brian De Palma, Terrence Malick, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, we'd have a full 9-block board of bearded bards.
So many to pick from...

Re: 103 The Lady Eve
Unless I'm mistaken, it appears there's an easter egg on the disc. A minute clip entitled Preston Sturges' 11 Commandments of Box Office Success. Didn't see mention of it anywhere.
