Yeah, his ultra high pride in sticking to it for a pure music experience causes him to make dumb career/financial decisions constantly. I mean, what would be the harm in taking the paying gig in Chicago he's offered? Yeah, the people at the club would not hear his music, at least not immediately. But he'd have a reliable income and time in the day to work on his art and possibly promote it on the side, and maybe it eventually finds an audience. He doesn't accept that, for example, many a fine actor did lame work and busted tables while they tried to break out. That path is beneath him because of foolish ego and pride. Its why I laughed with such pain when he does seem to find some audience at the end of the film, only to be quickly forgotten because of the performer who follows him.mfunk9786 wrote:It's also a self-fulfilling prophecy. He puts Jim and Jean down for being "careerist," aka wanting to actually succeed and make money with their musical talent. So he's getting exactly what he's bargained for, but he also can't support himself or relax because of it, and it's pretty obvious that behind that facade he's waiting for someone to stumble onto his incredible talent rather than having to put himself out there the way Jim does by, say, writing "Please, Mr. Kennedy."
That's far from confirmed, it's just a theory.Superswede11 wrote:*Three yearsJack Phillips wrote: We only see him for a week,

You may be right about that. The current Blu-Ray has been going for $9.99 for a pretty long time now, and it wasn't exactly a subpar disc. The Narrator Returns wrote:I don't see a lot of money there.
I think I'm in the same boat. I gave it a honest try, but I came away from the first viewing with mixed feelings. Gave it another try, but I don't see the masterpiece people are talking about. Even if I can give the film a pass for some egregious missteps with the music and the culture, it feels like one of their lesser, snottier works.domino harvey wrote:Like most Coen movies, though, I just don't "get it"
By "instant cult cachet around this film," do you mean people spelling the character's first name correctly?domino harvey wrote:I was just thinking the other day about the inexplicable instant cult cachet around this film...I just don't "get it"
I imagine getting them to sit for both interviews at once is what has held up Barton Fink for so long.krnash wrote:here's hoping they can get the brothers to talk.
